AFRICA IN 50 YEARS

ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL PRESSURES

The Africa in 50 Years project is a partnership between the Africa Policy Institute (API), the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation (DHF), Sweden and the Department of Sociology, University of Witswatersrand, Johannesburg. The project is mainly focusing on the impact of social, demographic, environmental and climatic changes in the next half a century or so.

Implementation

The initial project stage will involve composing an annotated bibliography of the social and environmental pressures upon Africa in 50 years time.  Much work on this has been done, especially by organizations such as the UNDP and UNEP, but there is great concern that this work is not entering the social science mainstream.

The focus areas, for now, will include:

  • How water scarcity, increasing population, deforestation, desertification and global warming will impact upon poverty, sustainable incomes, housing, land availability and conflict in Africa.
  • For the moment, Africa includes North Africa, although future consideration may be made to restrict the focus to Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • The broad perspective is:  what pressures will confront Africa in the next 50 years?

The select annotated bibliography is likely to form the core of a bibliographical publication and promoting special issues of either or both Development Dialogue or the Journal of Contemporary African Studies. At this stage, the bibliography should be about 100 items, although this will need to be reassessed at a later stage. It will be a joint property, and if need be, copyrighted by the Dag Hammarskjold Foundation (DHF) and the API.
