Peter Kagwanja is currently the president and chief executive of the Africa Policy Institute, a leading pan-African think-tank on governance, security and strategic issues (
Pretoria &
Nairobi). He is also a Senior Research Associate at the Department of Political Science,
University of
Pretoria; and visiting professor of Political and International Studies,
Rhodes University,
South Africa.
Dr. Kagwanja has also served as Executive Director of Democracy and Governance at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC)
Pretoria and Director of the International Crisis Group,
Southern Africa. Dr Kagwanja was a J.W. Fulbright fellow at the
University of
Illinois at Urbana-Campaign (USA) where he also obtained a doctorate in History, Politics and International law and a visiting scholar at Oxford University (UK) and
University of
Leiden (the
Netherlands).
Dr Kagwanja has served as an expert adviser and consultant on policy, international affairs and strategic issues with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and the Office of the President (
South Africa) as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Office of the President (
Kenya). He has been consulted by the African Union, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the New Partnership for
Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and the United Nations Peace Building Commission (PBC) and the Office of Special Advisor on African Affairs (OSAA).
His most recent books include Corrupting Power-Sharing: The Africa Policy Series 2009, The State of the Nation:
South Africa, 2008 and
Kenya`s Uncertain Democracy: The Electoral Crisis of 2008 (Routledge, 2009). Dr Kagwanja is a frequent expert guest with leading media channels including BBC, Al-Jazeera, Voice of America and SABC among others.
