Introduction
Kenya’s 2007-2008 post-election violence threw into the global spotlight of researchers, academics, activists, policy communities and donors the violent democratic retreat in Africa. But questions remain about the nexus between ethnicity, land and conflict in explaining the violent setback to the continent’s democratic transition. The Africa Policy Institute (API), in partnership with the International Development Research Center and the World Vision International, launched this two-year field-based research project with the aim of informing intellectual and policy debates and processes on conflict in Africa specifically, and on the future of democracy in general.
