Dr. Monica Juma appointed to UN-African Union Panel
Africa Policy Institute Director, Dr. Monica Juma, has been appointed to the United Nations-African Union Panel established in accordance with Security Council Resolution 1809 (2008), to commence on 15th September 2008
In his letter of invitation, Mr. Alain Le Roy, Under-Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations said that effective cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union on peacekeeping is essential, yet the African Union faces enormous challenges in its efforts to strengthen its peacekeeping capacity.
Drawing on lessons learned from past and current African Union peacekeeping operations, the Panel will explore possible ways to enhance support of such operations established under a United Nations mandate. Its reports to the Secretary-General will be provided to the Security Council for consideration. Further, the members of the Panel will have expertise in peace and security issues, African Affairs, United Nations peacekeeping and United Nations rules and regulations.
Mr. Le Roy noted that Ms. Juma’s background, experience and knowledge would be invaluable to the work of the Panel, which will include five other members from different geographic regions. Dr. Juma has previously worked as a Senior Analyst on issues of peace and security in the AU-Nepad programme at SaferAfrica.
