Transnational Crime and Counter-Terrorism (TCC)
The main goal of the Transnational Crime and Counter-Terrorism (TCC) of the Africa Policy Institute is highlight the role of African governments, civil society (including the media) and regional and international structures and mechanisms in combating trans-border crimes such as human trafficking and terrorism. The programme aims is to strengthen the capacity of African governments, networks, institutions and inter-governmental agencies to respond effectively to the challenges posed by genocide, terrorism and crimes against humanity while upholding the rule of law and human rights of those involved. The programme’s focus has been mainly on counter-terrorism, but recognizes the need to widen the net to other transnational crimes like piracy. Its aims are to:
Promote relevant and durable solutions to terrorism by suing research and analysis to highlight African perspectives, realities and priorities in global counter-terrorism and to re-orient thinking on responses to terrorism towards strengthening the criminal justices system, involvement of non-state actors and emphasis on underlying conditions such as under-development.
Work with networks of civil society, academics and think-tanks to create knowledge platforms aimed at empowering victims of terrorism and promoting human rights approaches to counter-terrorism.
Creating awareness of African counter-terrorism architecture and efforts and the role of international strategies and initiatives such as the UN Counter-terrorism strategy in resolving the problem of terrorism and piracy.
