Peace-building and Regional Integration Programme (PRIP)

The Peace-building and regional integration programme (PRIP) of the Africa Policy Institute (API) is dedicated to achieving the goals of peace-building (promotion of conflict resolution, reconciliation, dismantling of war economies, the re-integration of former combatants into civilian society and security sector reform); consolidating democracy, strengthening the rule of law and improving respect of human rights, justice and accountability in Africa. The programme pursues these goals by generating and sharing policy relevant research knowledge with African governments, civil society and institutions as well as external partners to promote pro-poor policies. PRIP also works to strengthen the research and analysis capacity of African actors to respond effectively to the challenges of political instability, conflict and other threats to democracy.   The Programme aims to:

  • Generate policy relevant research and analysis on peace-building to feed into the works of African political leadership, policy makers, civil society, the UN Peace-building Commission (PBC) and other stakeholders.
  • Contribute to debate and discourse on various aspects of peace-building, including past peace-agreements and challenges of power-sharing arrangements in countries such as Kenya and Zimbabwe, highlighting their impact on democracy and on disadvantaged social categories such as women, youth, refugees and the internally displaced.
  • Create awareness of and share knowledge on on-going conflicts in Northern Uganda, Eastern Congo, Somalia, Chad, and Sudan ( Darfur) and challenges to democracy, governance, and the rule of law in countries emerging from prolonged conflicts.
